News | Nate Talks . . . Fancy a Drink?

12 February 2009

The Book of Obadiah comprises only twenty-one verses,
and is a prophecy against Edom

"The day of the LORD is near for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your deeds will return upon your own head.
Just as you drank on my holy hill,
so all the nations will drink continually;
they will drink and drink
and be as if they had never been."

Obadiah v15-16

Fancy a drink?

"Wake up Jerusalem, get up right now
You who have drunk from the hand of the Lord,"
Isaiah declared to the people of God
Who’d been ransacked by foreigners’ swords.

And God said to Jeremiah, "Take from my hand
This cup filled with the wine of my wrath,
Give it to the nations so they stagger and vomit
For they’re full of rebellion and scoff."

So when God speaks to Edom, through the briefest of prophets,
Saying "nations will continually drink,
And become just as though they never had been" ,
Then really, O what must we think?

We’re to think of God’s judgement in terms of a cup
That is brimming with scorn and derision,
This cup must be drunk for God must be just
And it all seems to fit in his vision.

Because Jesus himself in the garden of tears,
Was praying that something might pass
For the goblet of God, which is filled with His wrath,
Was presented to him as a glass.

Though drink it he did as he hung on the cross,
Taking death so that we never should,
And a new drink is made that brings life to the dead,
As we’re told "Shed for you is His blood."
